Donnie was been training in traditional Chinese martial arts like Kung Fu and Tai Chi since he was a child by his mother, who was a martial arts master in the Boston area. The protagonist is a stuffy little bureaucrat from a small town arriving for his honeymoon in Rome with his very sheltered (only a bit more than himself) young bride. He has few romantic thoughts on his mind. His main concern is a meeting with his uncle, a minor official at the Vatican, who has arranged an audience with the Pope.
While the jerk is taking a nap, his bride plots a momentary escape to fulfill her one wild fantasy- A meeting with the "White Sheik" a hero of the "frumetti. a sort of trashy photographic comic book popular in 50s Italy- to whom she has sent red hot fan mail. She learns that the studio is only a few blocks from the hotel and resolves to meet her secret love for just a minute and get back to the hotel in time. Through a comedy of errors she is accidentally "abducted" to a shooting session where she learns to be careful about what she wishes for. Meanwhile, her husband is desperately searching for her and coming up with all kinds of frantic excuses to his family for her absence. I won't describe the movie any further for the benefit of those who wish to see it.
A very effective comedy with plenty of innuendo for adults and even some slapstick and sight gags. Loads of laughs for young and old. A very sweet story that nevertheless contains some of the surrealistic elements of Fellini's later work. If possible, get the subtitled version. The Italian language enhances the comical effect. A real gem.

Two aimless young bisexual men wander a morally and physically decaying world of casual decadence, rendered in the gaudy colours that until then had never been associated with antiquity. White marble gave way to crumbling stucco, bawdy graffiti, and urban filth. Sexually ambivalent in his private life, Fellini revealed in Satyricon a preoccupation with obesity, mutilation, and hermaphroditism that many found disturbing. Disappointingly, he never realized his hope of casting both Groucho Marx and Mae West in the film. In Roma (1972; Fellinis Roma) the director applied the tools of fantasy to the national capital, alternating episodes of the modern hippie occupation of its monuments with his teenage visits to its brothels and the excavations that uncover what remains of the ancient city. An “ecclesiastical fashion show” controversially mocks the Vatican that consistently condemned his films. For Amarcord (1973) which won Fellini a fourth Oscar for best foreign film, he re-created wartime Rimini in Romes Cinecittà studios for a nostalgic remembrance of adolescence under fascism, which restored the eccentricity of his early life that had been omitted from I Vitelloni. According to Christensen, Hutchence was rushed to hospital and woke up determined to leave. The injury resulted in Hutchence having permanent loss of sense of smell and taste. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] Plans for a biographical drama film about Michael Hutchence were being developed with a script written by Australian film-maker Richard Lowenstein. Lowenstein had previously collaborated with Hutchence in Dogs in Space and INXS music videos. The film was to feature an actor as Hutchence, however the idea of casting someone proved very difficult and with the announcement of the miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, it made the director switch to an archival documentary. [8] The documentary film gathered early development funding and support by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Screen Australia and Film Victoria. [9] A pitch trailer was produced and shown at the 2016 Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne where BBC Music took interest. [9] In July 2016, it was announced that a documentary film about the singer-songwriter Michael Hutchence had the official support of INXS band members and manager Chris Murphy, with Richard Lowenstein signed on to direct. [10] 11] 12] 13] The director conducted the first interview (for the biopic research) in 2010 with U2 lead singer Bono who were on tour in Melbourne. Band members from INXS were then interviewed and filmed in 2011, gradually building up an archive of footage. The story is that Jaya Nigam (Kangana Ranaut) an Indian Railways employee in Bhopal, got married because she fell in love with her husband, Prashant (Jassi Gill) also employed by the Railways in the same city. She adores her precocious son, Aditya (Yagya Bhasin) dotes on his every gesture and cheeky interjection, and is loathe to leave him alone unattended for any length of time. The point being made is that she did not sacrifice her sports career to start a family, but opted for it. Her priorities come through well, and the personality and character of Jaya is nicely formed, with the help of a natural and unaffected performance by Kangana. However, the happy scenario of domestic bliss goes on for far too long, and so, later, the explanation for her burning need to make a comeback in the national ‘Kabbadi team, is not convincing. Jaya meets a buddy from her old glory days, a ‘Kabbadi player, now a coach, who tells her that she was the best, and has let herself go to seed. Meenu (Richa Chadda) is single, footloose, affectionate and independent, and works on Jayas mind. By the time we return from the interval, or thereabouts, Jaya is training with her friend and is persuaded to accept an offer from the Eastern Zone of the Railways to play for them – the condition being that she has to come to Kolkata to practise with the team, and to mentor the younger players. ‘Kabbadi is a great contact sport, but is not very cinema friendly. We repeatedly watch a ‘raider enter an opposition court, use athleticism and skill to escape, and/or be brought down in a scuffle. The filming of this activity in ‘Panga does not exactly set the screen on fire. Even Jayas vocal and expressive young son comes to life only when his Mom is the ‘raider. Nikhil Mehrotra and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's screenplay (additional screenplay by Nitesh Tiwari) also retains the simplicity and relatability. The writing is peppered with some entertaining moments that keep the interest going. On the flipside, it could have been tighter, especially towards the second half. Also, the film gives a heavy déjà vu of DANGAL [2016. Nikhil Mehrotra and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's dialogues (additional dialogues by Nitesh Tiwari) are one of the highpoints. Some of the one-liners, especially the ones uttered by the child actor, will bring the house down. Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's direction is good. Its evident that her own personal experiences have also seeped in the film. A few sequences are very deftly handled. The finale especially is too good and would be greeted with claps and whistles. The beauty of it is that you know whats going to happen and yet, you cant help but feel exhilarated when it unfolds. Also, to see the way Jaya gets the support of her husband, her son, her mother, her bestie and even her neighbour is quite heartwarming and would be loved by female audiences especially. On the flipside, except for the ending, the predictability of the script does affect the impact along with the long length. Jayas flashback doesnt really make it clear that she had achieved such heights of stardom. Also, Prashant seemed sad when Jaya announces her plan to do a comeback but it wasnt the case, as revealed later on. This bit was bewildering and could have been done away with or handled better. PANGA has a fine commencement showing the small town life with the focus on Jaya's family and their day to day activities. A lot happens in the first half – Meenu coming back into her life, Jaya missing the sports day, Jaya getting reprimanded by Adi, Jaya's flashback and Jayas practise session. The first half surprisingly is just 51 minutes long. The post interval portion, however, is almost 1 hour 18 minutes in duration and could have been shorter. Its touching to see how Jaya balances between her passion and her family and also the politics that happens over the selection of the team. But the pace of the film is slow here and also, the training session is stretched. Jaya not getting to play for most of the matches also gets a bit repetitive. Thankfully, the climax is powerful which helps the film end on a high note. PANGA rests on Kangana Ranaut majorly, though others also do well. The actress, as always, delivers a smashing performance and not even for a single second, does she go off character. As Jaya the mother, shes quite adorable and convincing. And even as Jaya the player, she is effortless. Jassie Gill lends able support and his character will be loved. But he grins a bit too much, especially in the flashback portions, and it makes him look a bit of a caricature. Yagya Bhasin is a rockstar. He gets to play a great part and he uplifts the mood of the film in many places. Richa Chadha is credited as a special appearance part but she has a major role to play. She too contributes a lot to the film, not just in terms of comedy, but also in terms of much-needed moral support to Jaya. Megha Burman (Nisha Das) has a late entry but leaves a huge mark. Neena Gupta (Jayas mother) is passable. Rajesh Tailang (Indian national coach) is good and is an actor to watch out for. Smita Dwivedi (Smita Tambe, team captain) Kusum Shastri (Jayas neighbour) Sudhanva Deshpande (Indian Railway coach) and Shantanu Das (Eastern Railway coach) are decent. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is soulful but is not memorable at all. 'Bibby Song' the title track and 'Jugnu' are okay while 'Dil Ne Kaha' and 'Wahi Hain Raste' are forgettable. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara's background score is subtle but rightfully loud in the scene where Adi tells Prashant that Jaya should make a comeback. Jai I Patel's cinematography is fine in the crucial Kabaddi scenes but in a few scenes, its quite in-the-face. Sandeep Meher's production design is straight out of life. Rushi Sharma, Manoshi Nath and Bhagyashree Rajurkar's costumes also add to the authenticity. Special mention should also go to Sunita Vishwas Rao (Kabaddi co-ordinator) Gauri Wadekar (Kabaddi Coach and choreographer) and Abdul Salam Ansari (Kabaddi action director) for making the Kabaddi scenes look so rich and real. Ballu Saluja's editing should have been slick. On the whole, PANGA is a progressive and touching sports drama that works thanks to its plot, execution, some fine moments and of course the superlative performance of Kangana Ranaut. At the box office, it faces tough competition from STREET DANCER 3D and also the holdover release TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR and hence itll need a strong word of mouth to succeed.

I can't watch this b s anymore. I wish I could have eaten at Windows of the World. Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

I may be biased but this is all wrong. Everything was clear about how they came from wealth and their father lost it, the timeline wasnt confusing, and the casting was well done. Ive seen the other adaptations & read the book. It may be done differently than the others, but this is a little women for OUR generation. It was different so little girls like me had an easier time relating to it and finding ourselves in it. Jo was also not the only girl people saw themselves in. We saw ourselves in Amy, Beth, and Meg as well. Theyre not afterthoughts like everyone thinks. Beth is a kindhearted, selfless, and powerful character in her own right. Shes the quiet introvert, not just the one that dies. Meg is the one who wants to be loved, and loves John. She doesnt marry for money she married for love, and that in itself if a feminist act for that time. Of course Jo is the independent wild heroine everyone wants to be. Amy isnt just the brat, she is lost. Theyre all wonderful characters with heart and soul. I think Greta did a fantastic job at giving all of the girls a story. Its not Jos story anymore, and I think people felt it strange that it wasnt that.

While leaving the school after a meeting with the principal, he chances upon the daughter of Wan, Yonah being bullied by a rival cheerleader, Becky. The fight is disrupted by an earthquake, and Wan tells Ip they will finish their fight at the upcoming Mid Autumn Festival. Geddes asks Frater to challenge the Grandmasters at the Festival, defeating a few of them until Ip interferes and defeats him. Meanwhile Wan, who was supposed to be present at the festival, is arrested by the immigration officers. Upon seeing Frater defeated, Geddes barges into the Association to find out where Wan is kept, and defeats everyone there. He then threatens Walters to release Wan into the Marines' custody before bringing Wan into the camp to fight him. Due to a tip-off by a student of Lee, the Association is left empty by the time the immigration officers raid the place. Lee provides refuge for the Association, earning their respect. Wan is seriously injured from the fight with Geddes. Ip, filled with emotions, finally reveals to his son that he has cancer, which finally allows him to talk to his father over the phone after many attempts by Ip. Wong Kar-Wai s “ The Grandmaster ” is the best of the recent works about the Foshan-born icon, but Wilson Yip s “Ip Man” series is tough to beat for charm and verve. Yip started his career as an irreverent genre re-upholsterer, making violent, punk genre films, the most famous of which is like 1998s “Bio Zombie. ” In 2005 he met and began working with Donnie Yen and settled into a more conventional rhythm and style, his mise-en-scene broadening to take in the balletic performance of his star. When they made the first “Ip Man, ” with the incredible Sammo Hung handling fight choreography, it became an instant sensation. The film treated Ip Man as a humble folk hero who liberated the people of his province by teaching them to defend themselves with Wing Chun-style kung fu from greedy bosses and the invading Japanese army in the lead up to the Second World War. A sequel was rushed into production that featured Hung in a supporting role and took even more money at the box office. By the time “ Ip Man 3 ” hit theaters (grossing 157 million dollars against a 36-million-dollar budget) the movies' formula had solidified into a showcase for some of the worlds most famous mixed martial artists. “Ip Man 4: The Finale” is apparently going to be the last time Yen dons the familiar black cassock to play Ip Man, and Yip orchestrates a fittingly spectacular finish to the saga. Advertisement When we last left Yip and writer Edmond Wong s version of Ip Man, his wife had died of cancer, leaving him to raise his son (Ye He) by himself. Mans fortunes decrease further when he learns that he too has been diagnosed with cancer (it would kill him in 1972) which means he only has a limited time to ensure that his sons life takes the right turning. He flies to America at the behest of his most famous student Bruce Lee ( Kwok-Kwan Chan) and uses the opportunity to look for a good school for his boy. Immediately, trouble finds him. Hes called to a meeting of the heads of martial arts schools in America, thinking hes just being shown hospitality as the worlds most renowned Wing Chun practitioner. But it turns out theyre all furious about Bruce Lee teaching kung fu to westerners. The head of the Tai Chi school, Wan Zong Hua (Yue Wu) demands Ip Man put a muzzle on Lee and he refuses, believing that everyone should be able to practice the art form if they so choose. Their disagreement almost comes to blows. Things go no more smoothly for Ip Man in the coming days. His visit to a prestigious school ends with the admissions officer saying that short of a 10, 000 dollar donation or a letter of recommendation from other prosperous Chinese emigrants (like Wan Zong Hua, for instance) his son will never get into a decent American school. While hes touring the grounds, he notices Wan Zong Huas daughter Yonah (Vanda Margraf) being bullied by a white cheerleader (Grace Englert) and comes to her rescue, which starts the Tai Chi master on the path of recognizing Ip Man as a more principled man than he initially gave him credit. Theyll need each other in the coming days because when that cheerleader tells her parents she was attacked by Chinese people, they involve INS and the military in their efforts to try and oust the Chinese from the area. As it happens theres a Gunnery Sergeant named Barton Geddes ( Scott Adkins) whos been itching for a way to put the local Chinese in their place, and this is all the pretext the virulent racist needs to start cracking skulls. Yips “Ip Man” films are constructed like golden-age Hollywood musicals or “Step Up” movies, and as they were never going to be perfect history (four movies come and go without a single mention of Ip Mans illegitimate child) this is a wise and welcome decision. Theres little plot, a new character is introduced, and then theres a jaw-dropping sparring scene. The great Yuen Woo-Ping steps in to replace Sammo Hung after “ Ip Man 2 ” and his work here is typically jaw-dropping; as beautiful as it is nerve-wracking. Yuen Woo-Ping also directed this years similarly rich “ Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, ” following Zhang Jin s character from “Ip Man 3, ” and is planning a sequel as we speak, a small comfort to fans of these films winning aesthetics and gorgeous choreography. Having already traded blows in show stopping duels with Sammo Hung, Mike Tyson, Darren and Shahlavi among others, Donnie Yen shares lovingly orchestrated fight scenes with martial artist Chris Collins, Wu and finally Adkins in “The Finale. ” Theres also room for Chans Bruce Lee to show off in a back alley brawl with some racist Karate experts. Chans Lee impression is truly wonderful, perfectly capturing his swagger and his signature body language. Hes almost charismatic enough to steal a little of Yens thunder. Yen, the Fred Astaire of kung fu, is finally beginning to look somewhat his age, which adds poignancy to his performance and adds no little extra tension to his fight scenes; can he still defeat his opponents as handily as he used to? His scene with Adkins, especially, is a nail-biter. Adkins isnt usually framed by other directors to emphasize his relative enormity as so much of his screen persona revolves around him being underestimated by his opponents. Here hes a tank, swift and sledgehammer-hard, and you genuinely worry about Yens body standing up to Adkins legwork and formidable fists. Its one of the few times in the four “Ip Man” movies that it feels like the filmmakers arent stacking the decks in their heros favor. To go with the films musical dramatic structure, Yip and Johnny Tos regular cinematographer Siu-Keung Cheng create a world alive with brilliant color and ornate design. This feels at times like a Stanley Donen or Li Han-hsiang movie, with precise framing of weightless bodies in wonderfully lit presentational spaces. Yips maturation from his early Category 3 days to one of the most dependable directors of martial arts has been most rewarding because hes realized that being a more serious director doesnt mean losing vibrancy. The first two “Ip Man” movies had sombre, reserved color palettes, grey and brown to match the depressive mood of pre-and-post-war China. In “The Finale” Yens signature black clothing cant help but stand out against the neon set design. Yip seems like hes having as much fun with every single production element here, as opposed to just saving his energy for the death-defying combat sequences. Kenji Kawai's music is still too emphatic for its own good, but when the dancings this good, the tune hardly matters. The “Ip Man” movies have always been nationalistic triumphs, with Yen as the savior of the downtrodden, protecting China from the tyrannical Japanese in the first film, and then from Americans, and from the avaricious character they brought to China in the latest two. “Finale” leans hard into the series anti-racist message, turning Adkins sadistic sergeant into a mouthpiece for Trump-era bigotry (Adkins is the best actor among the villains; the sadistic cheerleader and her family seem to be reading their lines phonetically. Slowly the enmity the other masters feel toward Ip Man dissolves because theres greater threat to their way of life than Lee. Its a clumsily delivered but deeply felt message of cooperation in trying times and surely theres no bad time for such a thing. Through four movies now Yens beatific kung fu master has taken punches for every kind of person, helping others by staying his best self in a violent world and only resorting to violence when its absolutely necessary.
